Sketching at Da Shop with USK Oahu and family

My son’s family came with me to the USK Oahu sketch outing in Kaimuki at Da Shop, a relatively new bookstore that is part of a publishing warehouse. They specialize in books and authors from Hawaii and Oceania. Along with the books displayed in the store and online, they have children talk stories, food events, author and artist exhibitions, film screenings and lectures.

My sketch of my granddaughter, Ocean, sketching in the children’s corner.
I thought the children’s reading corner was so inviting. When I was a child I would have loved having a place like that to tuck into with a good book!

EDIM 2 - A Nearby Tree

Day 2 of the Every Day in May sketch challenge. How are you doing so far? Remember, it's meant to inspire and encourage, so don't worry, you can catch up or skip a day or two. Not too late to get started!

The prompt today is to sketch a nearby tree. The house is filled with the scent of lilacs, cut from my row of 9 in the back yard. But I am in love with the two white birches at the end of our front driveway next to the mailboxes. The light is illuminating them this morning as I stand across the street with my Pentalic Premier pen and Pentalic Aqua Sketchbook. I am tempted to get my little mini Altoids kit and dash in the shadows, but I resist. I am happy with the line work.....it says how connected everything is.

Once before, I made a proper watercolor painting of the sunlight and shadows on the bark.
You can zoom a high resolution image of the line drawing here on my Flickr photostream.

Edison

There's always something sketch-worthy in Skagit farm country, especially at the peak of the summer growing season. There are road side stands selling flowers this week, but they'll have home grown fresh vegetables and fruit to offer soon.

Although the Anacortes Sketchers were meeting for lunch at 12:30, I drove out a little early to see what the day would offer. I could have sketched the whole day and never made it to Edison, but I settled on doing a 15 minute ink sketch at Rosabella's Garden Bakery. Then I drove back to our lunch spot to wait for the others and added watercolor, parked in the shade. I need to let it dry before posting, so I'll add it into tomorrow's post.

With temperatures soaring into the high 90's elsewhere, the Anacortes sketchers lounged in the shade in Edison this afternoon. It was a refreshing 84°F, in the shade. My car made it to 100°F where it was parked on Cains Ct near "Hedgerow".

Some of the renowned restaurants were closed on Monday, but not the Breadfarm, where I bought a wonderful loaf of ciabatta bread, warm from the oven. (My husband and I enjoyed thick slices of it with brie, olives and cold prawns for dinner. Yumm!)
