I did it! With the support of #30x30Direct Watercolor I was able to accomplish my goal of painting daily for the month of June this year. Here are the results:

👋😎 Hello!
So school’s out and summer vacation has begun! This is true especially for me. For the past few years I have been teaching watercolor continuously through fall, winter and spring quarters with a few workshops sprinkled in during the summer. I have even held 8 week classes on Zoom for both summers during the Pandemic so far.
Day Zero
It’s time I took a break. I need to recharge my creative energy and work on some paintings that I’ve been wanting to do for a long time.
What better way to jump start my journey than the annual 30x30 Direct Watercolor Challenge hosted by Uma Kelkar and Marc Taro Holmes. We’re starting on June 1, 2022, with the intention to paint a watercolor a day without any preliminary pencil drawing and post on the 30x30DirectWatercolor Facebook group. Looks like we’re going to have a bumper crop of roses on the studio wall this year.
My goal is to show up and paint. It will be just me in my studio creating what I personally feel like doing. One of my goals is to work on balancing my compositions with more dark values. We’ll see what other skills I can develop to the next level as well.

Springing back into the classroom for April watercolor!
We’re Back!
The Skylight Room promises to resound with welcoming expressions and extra creative energy on Friday mornings this Spring. Barring any unforeseen setbacks, with *health protocols in place, we will finally meet in person for 8 weeks of stimulating watercolor classes. We can’t wait to see you!

Lavender Farm Workshop-Wednesday July 28
At last!
This will be my first live and in person watercolor workshop since everything closed down because of the pandemic. I found us a perfect location for watercolor plein air while the summer weather seems consistent. There are super clean facilities, outdoor tables and chairs with lots of room to spread out and spectacular views of the lavender fields and surrounding forests, valleys and mountains. And there is a coffee stand on the premises that has lavender lemonade and ice cream!

Level
Workshops are designed for all levels of participants from beginners to advanced watercolor painters. Instructor will provide guidance and tips necessary to get started for beginner painters while more seasoned artists will be challenged to further their skills with a fun array of fast-paced subjects and themes. Some previous experience will be helpful but not required.
Registration
This may be our only outdoor in person workshop for the summer. I’ve learned to be flexible as new information comes to light. We'll see. You can register for individual workshops as they are posted.

If you want to do this along with me, see below for a materials list. You probably have everything you need right there at home.
DIY WATERCOLOR SKETCHBOOK
- 3 or 4 sheets of 140lb watercolor paper (8x10 or up to 11x14)
- an empty cereal box or other recyclable cardboard
- scissors, ruler, pencil, bone folder
- thumb tack or push pin
- yarn/string/waxed binders’ thread, Choose one
- long needle with large eye for the thread, like a darning needle or book binder’s needle
- You can use wrapping paper or fabric big enough to cover the cardboard.
- Elmers glue will work to glue the paper or fabric to the cardboard cover but takes time to dry. Extra strong glue stick is nice. Fabric Tac glue works great but it’s expensive.
